Highly Structured / Individualized / Multisensory / Sequential
The Orton-Gillingham approach is a multisensory, structured, and sequential method of teaching reading, writing, and spelling. It utilizes visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements to help students connect language sounds with letters and symbols. By breaking down language into smaller, manageable units, the Orton-Gillingham approach provides a clear and logical path for building literacy skills.
For students with dyslexia, the Orton-Gillingham approach can be transformative. Its explicit instruction and systematic progression help to overcome the challenges associated with dyslexia, such as difficulty with phonemic awareness and decoding. However, the benefits of this approach extend to all learners. Its emphasis on multisensory learning and repetition strengthens foundational literacy skills, leading to improved reading fluency, comprehension, and spelling accuracy. Whether a student has dyslexia or not, the Orton-Gillingham approach provides a solid foundation for lifelong literacy success.
My approach to guiding students to excellence is holistic and relationship-based. I entered the world of the Orton-Gillingham Approach almost three decades ago as a mom in desperate need to help my son crack the written code. As the letters came together and began to make sense to David, he described it as a well-fitting shoe. Since I supported children with learning differences in the Surrey School District, my son prompted me to help other children experience the success and excellence he had achieved. Over the years as a Montessori educator and Orton Gillingham practitioner and mentor, my passion for this scientifically-based approach has grown profoundly. It has been an honour to support not only my son, but hundreds of students strive for excellence in their education.
As an Orton-Gillingham practitioner of 25 years, I bring a combination of formal qualifications, hands-on experience, and a deep commitment to my students’ success. I’m certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, Reach OG Learning Centre, Supervising Mentor Orton-Gillingham Practioner, American Montessori Society certification, and a Special Education Certification from Kwantlen University. I am dedicated to staying current with the latest research and best practices through ongoing professional development. My experience includes extensive work with students who have dyslexia or other reading difficulties, and I’m proud of the progress they’ve made under my guidance. I am passionate about teaching and empowering students to overcome challenges and reach their full potential. My approach is rooted in patience, empathy, and understanding, and I value building strong relationships with my students and their families. I believe that collaboration with other professionals is essential for creating a truly supportive and successful learning environment.
More than a business, my mission is to change lives and give hope. To change self-doubt into confidence. To guide and empower students to discover their unique gifts and strengths. Your excellence is my mission. – Avril Wessels
